Publications : Wireless Sensor Networks Market Report

publications Wireless Sensor Networks - the Next Ten Years

Dublin, Ireland -- Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), self organising, self healing networks of small "nodes", have huge potential across industrial, military and other many other sectors. While appreciable sales have now been established, major progress depends on standards and achieving twenty year life.

The new IDTechEx report "Wireless Sensor Networks 2010-2020" draws lessons from the many successful installations in the last year.

It looks at the complex standards scene with particular focus on WirelessHART that is key to applications in the process industries in the short and medium term and it shows how the alternative ISA 100.11a has some way to go but may prove useful over a wider field of application and eventually subsume WirelessHART.

It examines recent successes of the various backers of ZigBee-related solutions, who is behind the alternatives and how they see the future.

The challenge of excessive power consumption of these nodes, that have to act as both tags and readers, is addressed. For example, progress has been good in getting the electronics to consume less electricity, by both improved signaling protocols and improved circuitry.

Meetings : DCMAS Network holds its 10th annual meeting at IEC

Meetings The DCMAS (Developing Countries in Metrology, Accreditation and Standardization) Network is a group of representatives from specialized international organizations promoting and implementing MAS (Metrology, Standardization and Conformity Assessment) activities in developing countries.

The members are:

  • BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures)
  • IAF (International Accreditation Forum)
  • IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)
  • ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation)
  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
  • ITC (International Trade Centre)
  • ITU-T (Telecommunication standardization sector of International   Telecommunication Union)
  • OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology)
  • UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization)
  • UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe)

The Network was set up so that the different organizations operating at an international level can work together on mutually agreed projects, while knowing what activities are being undertaken by the others.

There are three different components: metrology, accreditation and standardization. Being part of the Network enables them to share knowledge and experience as well as participate in each other's programmes and initiatives.

Said Françoise Rauser, of the IEC Secretariat, "Meeting together in the DCMAS gives us the opportunity to network, exchange information with the other organizations on what they're doing in developing countries and get a better understanding of their programmes."
